Late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will become just one of 32 Americans to lay in state or honor in the Capitol Rotunda since it was established in 1824, according to Politico.

Barack Obama, who McCain unsuccessfully ran against in 2008 spoke very highly of him, saying: "Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did".

Presidents past and present joined members of Congress from both parties and world leaders in mourning Senator John McCain and praising him for a lifetime of service and accomplishments.

Mr McCain died of brain cancer on Saturday aged 81 in his home state of Arizona.

McCain, 81, died on August 25 after a yearlong battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth", said Meghan McCain, one his seven children. "I didn't vote the same way he did, but I admired him for doing what he did", Flake said.

Rick Davis, former presidential campaign manager for McCain who is serving as a family spokesman, read the farewell message at a press briefing in Phoenix.

Colonel Trần Trọng Duyệt praised McCain for both his conduct during his imprisonment and later work as a US politician. Twitter users also bashed Trump for sharing an Instagram post about McCain's death that featured a picture of himself. Flags at the White House were lowered to half-staff for McCain on Sunday but are now flying at full-staff.

Speaking to reporters after writing in a book of condolence, United States ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink said Mr McCain was "a great leader and real hero" who helped normalise relations between the former enemies.

"A passionate advocate for American global leadership, Senator McCain rightly bemoaned those who favored a U.S. pullback from world affairs", Harris added.

Obama and former President George W. Bush were asked to give eulogies at his services.

McCain "was a man of honor, a true patriot in the best sense of the word", Jimmy Carter wrote.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, meanwhile, announced plans to introduce a resolution to rename the Senate's Russell office building after McCain - a nod to the deep, bipartisan friendships McCain amassed throughout his career in the Senate.

"These occasions are either authorized by a congressional resolution or approved by the congressional leadership, when permission is granted by survivors", the Architect of the Capitol instructs on its website.
