Study Finds Cheerios, Oats, Other Breakfast Foods May Contain Weed Killer

New study finds glyphosate in kids' cereals and snack bars

A study of dozens of popular oat-based breakfast foods delivered sobering news this week when nearly all of the products examined by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) were found to contain the chemical glyphosate.

Johnson's case was the first to go to trial because doctors said he was near death.

"We don't know a lot about the effects of glyphosate on children", Lowry said.

There are more than 5 000 similar plaintiffs across the US.

Glyphosate rich Roundup is the most popular and widely used pesticide in the U.S.

Now there's another popular food product that people need to be concerned about, according to a new report released by the Environmental Working Group.

.

After the verdict and related news, the EWG released test results from their independent laboratory that found the chemical glyphosate in 43 out of 45 types of cereal.

For example, the FDA announced that Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. recalled their pillsfor heart failure and high blood pressure after finding a defect known to cause cancer. He had claimed that Roundup, the weed killer made by Monsanto, caused his terminal cancer. "Give your child a varied diet so they, one, learn how to eat different foods because sometimes kids get stuck if they're only fed one thing".

The World Health Organization calls glyphosate a probable carcinogen.

The active chemical in Roundup, glyphosate, was classified "probably carcinogenic" in 2015 by the World Health Organisation, a finding that has been subject to scrutiny and lobbying.

National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson said the science on the safety of glyphosate was "clear and overwhelming" and the court had set a "reckless precedent". They pointed out that the evidence definitively linking the glyphosate in Roundup to cancer is scant.

In a statement Quaker said: "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products".

The Trump Administration's Waters of the US rule was delivered a legal blow this week when a SC federal judge issued an injunction.

We expect better from General Mills and Quaker Oats, and we will continue to urge consumers to express their preference with their pocketbooks.

The German company, which owns controversial agricultural company Monsanto, says herbicides containing glyphosate are safe.

It is especially disappointing because these two multi-billion dollar companies can take the simple step of telling their oat farmers to stop using glyphosate as a harvest-time desiccant on their crops.

Dr. Jennifer Lowry, Chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health tells KTVU it is not uncommon to find pesticides in our food. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".

General Mills and Quaker Oats should volunteer to meet real health standards and make the effort to remove glyphosate from their products.

"Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are significantly below any regulatory limits and well within compliance of the safety standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as safe for human consumption".
