His case now lies at the heart of a diplomatic crisis between Turkey and the US that has prompted a crash of Turkey's lira currency.

The lira firmed as far as 5.75 against the dollar on August 15 and stood at 6.1320 at 8:43 ET in a move initially triggered by the Turkish court decision on the Greek soldiers who faced espionage charges.

The lira has lost almost 40 percent of its value against the dollar this year, sparking a sell-off in emerging market currencies and weighing on global stocks.

A Turkish court has rejected an appeal for United States Christian pastor Andrew Brunson to be released from house arrest during his trial on terrorism charges.

"They should have given him back a long time ago, and Turkey has in my opinion acted very, very badly", Trump told reporters at the White House, referring to Brunson.

Turkey has sought to persuade the United States to spare Turkey's state-owned Halkbank from a threatened fine for allegedly helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions.

He says the US will pay nothing for his return, because he is innocent and indicated the pressure on Turkey will continue. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Trump at a cabinet meeting on Thursday that more sanctions were ready to be put in place if Brunson were not freed.

Trump Weighs Revoking Security Clearances for Several Ex-Obama Officials
Ryan moved on quickly when asked whether it is unsafe for Trump to threaten people's security clearances over politics. Hayden later tweeted that a revocation of his security clearance wouldn't "have any effect on what I say or write ".

"Certainly it has been a very dramatic war of words between Ankara and Washington and Trump has made no bones about the financial repercussions that the United States is willing to undertake".

"We've already responded based on the World Trade Organisation rules and will continue to do so", Mr Pekcan was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency. A senior U.S. official told CNN that in exchange for Turkey's release of Brunson, Israel agreed to release Ebru Ozkan, a 27-year-old Turkish woman held in Israel on suspicion of aiding Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

He called Mr Brunson "a great patriot hostage". Investors also fret over Erdogan's influence over monetary policy.

Qatar pledged $15 billion of investment in Turkey on Wednesday that a government source in Ankara said would be channeled into its banks and financial markets.

Donald Trump is once again turning the heat on Turkey with the detention of an American pastor. "Having said that, we fully support the president's approach".

Brunson has been held in Turkey since 2016, accused of helping plot a coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The lira lost strength after Mr Mnuchin's remarks.
