Tesla chief Elon Musk's 'excruciating' personal pain spooks investors

I was about to go to bed, and then I read the New York Times article that came out tonight about how Musk "alternated between laughter and tears", while talking with a reporter Thursday, and how said that this past year had been "the most hard and painful year of my career", and called it "excruciating".

The interview also raises concerns about Musk's drug use.

Tesla stock (NASDAQ:TSLA) was down as much as 9%, hitting a low of $305.70 during intraday trading on Friday, amid reports that Elon Musk and the electric auto maker's board of directors are preparing to meet with the Securities and Exchange Commission as early as next week. Musk says that he came to this figure after deciding he wanted to offer a 20 percent premium on current stock prices which would have come out around $419, a number Musk rounded up to $420. Tesla produced 5,031 Model 3 electric cars in the last seven days of the second quarter, the company said in early July, meeting its long-elusive production target after several hiccups.

Tesla's chief also said his friends "are really concerned" about him.

Hansen alleges Tesla failed to disclose that it received written notice from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration about a Tesla employee possibly engaged in selling cocaine and crystal methamphetamine from the Nevada factory on behalf of a Mexican drug cartel, according to Meissner who did not release the whistleblower filing he said his client made to the SEC.

Musk denied knowledge of the search for a No. 2 and challenged his interviewers to name a better leader for Tesla: "Is there someone who can do the job better?" Is there someone who can do the job better? "Some board members are also aware that Mr. Musk has on occasion used recreational drugs, according to people familiar with the matter".

Although Musk and Tesla have been dogged by production issues for months, often requiring him to sleep at his production facility, his problems ratcheted up last week when an ill-advised tweet triggered a federal investigation.

"It seemed like better karma at $420 than at $419", he said in the interview. But I was not on weed, to be clear'. There's a reason for the word 'stoned.' You just sit there like a stone on weed'. They can have the reins right now'.

He explained that the August 7 tweet claiming assurance that funding for going private was secured was an attempt to be transparent, even though it surprised his own board and provoked questions from analysts about whether it violated stock market regulations.

However, the following day investigators in the San Francisco office of the Securities and Exchange Commission asked Tesla for explanations.

The company could face sanctions if regulators find it misled investors about production delays.

The billionaire was forced to apologise to a British diver who helped to rescue the boys after Musk labelled him "pedo guy".

The interview follows a pattern of weird behavior from the billionaire.

While Musk has described himself as "half Democrat, half Republican" in the past, critics said it was hypocritical of a green energy CEO to donate almost $40,000 to the GOP.
