Rains, landslides kill 24, displace thousands in India's Kerala state

The Met department has predicted rains till the middle of next week.

Wayanad district has been completely cut off by landslides and the state government has sought the army's help to restore the road network to the hill district.

With water level continuing to rise in the Idukki reservoir in Kerala, the fifth shutter of Idukki dam was lifted on Friday. Two persons were pulled out alive from the debris by the locals and police in a nearby town, they said.

With rivers and streams flowing in spate, people, particularly youngsters, have been asked to exercise caution.

Meanwhile, Kochi Airport in a statement said flight operations are continuing uninterrupted and there has been no cancellations.

"The operational area is intact".

The arrival operations were resumed from 3.05 pm this evening, a spokesperson of the airport said.

According to state disaster control room, 15,695 people have been shifted from low-lying areas to 241 relief camps across the state. One such affected district is Palakkad, as water released from the Malampuzha dam has inundated many parts and several rivers are overflowing.
