The Oscars Will Be Adding A New Category To Honor ‘Popular’ Movies

The Oscars are adding a new category to honor popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020.

The next year, the Academy expanded its Best Picture category to 10 nominees to try and recognize more "populist" films like The Dark Knight.

In order to fit in all 24 award categories, some will be presented during commercial breaks with the winning moments edited and aired later in the broadcast.

The most welcome piece of news, though, is that the Academy says it will take steps to battle the show's tendency to run long - way too long, in many cases - and create a "more globally accessible, three-hour telecast". The 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards, honoring the film achievements of 2018, will take place February 24, 2019.

But when it comes time to nominate films for the annual Academy Awards, they've mostly been snubbed. But the academy didn't specify what films would be categorized as "popular" or when this change would take effect.

Rick Gates Forced Into Admitting Extramarital Affair by Paul Manafort’s Lawyer
Gates testified that Manafort asked him to float Calk, who was on Trump's economic advisory council, for Secretary of the Army. Gates (46) admitted he had embezzled from other employers; he had volunteered the information once he began cooperating.

Does that mean even less Academy recognition for similar films now that they may have a separate category?

The 2019 Oscars will look a little different.

While details of the popular film category are yet to be announced, it could be a way of superhero films finally breaking through to the Oscars with the acclaimed box office hit Black Panther possibly making an appearance. Sure. Will it mean as much if it's in a special category that some fans view as a consolation prize that lessens the impact of the blockbusters while also potentially dulling the shine on the Best Picture category?

Essentially, with these changes, the Oscars are looking to become more like the MTV Movie Awards, and that's a damn shame. And that's saying a lot since you awarded Best Picture to Crash.

"Here's the ten highest-grossing films, when accounting for inflation aka America's most "popular" films," Palotta wrote. Certain categories - which have yet to be announced but will presumably include those honoring technical achievement - will be presented during commercial breaks.
