Iran: China "pivotal" to salvaging its nuclear deal

The White House on Monday is scheduled to announce the reimposition of tough economic sanctions on Iran, the first batch of sanctions to be revived since President Trump broke with the landmark Iran nuclear deal. "They have got to behave like a normal country", he said, describing Iranian leaders as "bad actors".

"For Bolton and others, pressure is an end in and of itself", Suzanne Maloney, deputy director of the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution, told AFP.

Nevertheless, Iranians have been demonstrating since December 2017 against the high cost of living and the systematic corruption within the system.

Experts see a number of possible outcomes for the current US policy toward Iran.

Washington made a decision to reimpose sanctions on Iran upon its withdrawal, accusing it of posing a security threat, and has told countries they must halt all imports of Iranian oil from November 4 or face USA financial measures.

The timing of the cryptocurrency's introduction couldn't be more important, as the aggressive moves by the Trump administration are already putting a tight squeeze on Iran's suffering economy.

Iran has reacted negatively to US President Donald Trump's offer of bilateral negotiations, with the head of the Revolutionary Guards dismissing the idea outright, writes Nassir Shirkhani.

Do note that group calls have a four-member limit, so you can't conduct a large-scale meeting via this route. The company is now starting to gradually roll out group video and audio call functionality to its userbase.

"I'm ready to meet anytime they want to", Trump said of Iran during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday.

Though the United States sanctions post-deal will be unilateral and not as strong as the pre-deal UN-imposed sanctions, fear angering the USA, the world's largest economy, will likely scare off Europeans who are otherwise committed to the deal.

The financial crisis in Iran could worsen to the point that mass protests make it impossible for the regime to hold on to power - though economic pressures risk galvanizing growing anti-American sentiment and support for hard-liners.

The exercise could shut down of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial Gulf passage for shipments of numerous commodities.

On Tuesday, hundreds of people rallied in cities including Isfahan, Karaj, Shiraz and Ahvaz to protest high inflation caused in part by the weak rial.

The authenticity of the videos could not immediately be verified. Protesters in the Iranian capital swarmed its historic Grand Bazaar on Monday, news agencies reported, and forced shopkeepers to close their stalls in apparent anger over the Islamic Republic's troubled economy, months after similar demonstrations rocked the country. There were no additional details.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane on his way home from Asia, Pompeo says Monday's re-imposition of sanctions is an important pillar in US policy toward Iran.
