Blood moon is a name given to the moon during a lunar eclipse.

At 8.24pm, the moon will start moving into the umbral shadow of the earth.

What was so important about the lunar eclipse of July 27 and 28?

"When you first spot Mars rising in the east after sunset, you'll be startled by how bright it looks", says Sky & Telescope's Observing Editor Diana Hannikainen.

The longest lunar eclipse of this century will coincide with Mars' closest approach to Earth in 15 years on Friday.

But the eclipse that will stretch from South America to New Zealand on Friday will last nearly four hours, coming in at three hours and 55 minutes.

Of the 7.4 billion people on Earth, about 7 billion people could - in theory - see the eclipse, except for those in North America and Greenland, where time of day didn't allow. And finally, there are total lunar eclipses, where the entire moon passes through the umbra.

The last blood moon was observed on January 31 2018.

Nigeria to experience longest total lunar eclipse Friday – Scientist

A graphical map by timeanddate.com show that Ghana will be part of the countries across the world that will witness the full lunar eclipse.

You will be able to see most of the Blood Moon from Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

'However instead of turning black as you might expect, the atmosphere of the Earth bends the light of the sun onto the moon causing it to turn a deep red colour'.

This is estimated to be the longest total lunar eclipse for the next century, until June 9, 2123. For that reason, lunar eclipses separated by a full Saros cycle have similar features, including the time of the year and the distance of the Moon from the Earth.

You may have already noticed Mars after dark in recent weeks, looking like a bright star wearing a lot of rouge. On average, the totality lasts approximately one hour to one hour and 30 minutes during moon eclipse.

Because blue and violet wavelengths are scattered more than red and orange ones, more of the red wavelengths reach the moon, making the moon appear red.

The Blood Moon captivated the world tonight but sky gazers in the United Kingdom were left disappointed as cloudy skies obscured the spectacle.

The total lunar eclipse, which turns the moon blood-red, has particularly been a source of dread and panic for people who did not comprehend the circumstances that led to this "strange" phenomenon. The only light reflected from the lunar surface has been refracted by Earth's atmosphere. Only red light makes it through the atmosphere. It will appear as a dark, reddish disk in the sky.

Severe weather over but rain continues
Some storms will also bring locally heavy rain at times and flooding, or flash flooding, will be a concern overnight. Tomorrow night: Still partly cloudy and muggy, with just an isolated shower or storm possible.
