Israel strikes Hamas targets in Gaza after troops attacked

The attacker, identified as Muhammad Tareq Yusuf, was eventually shot dead.

Mr Ovadia was a father to two young children and was reportedly on his way home to cook a meal for his wife when he was killed.

A 58-year-old victim was said to be seriously wounded but stable.

The Israeli army also said it is "reinforcing the defence" in the settlement of Adam, but Mr Lieberman suggested a longer-term strategy was needed.

The Israeli army said on Friday it had set up security inspections around the village, questioned a number of his family members and suspended their work permits. Palestinian villagers confronted the Israeli forces, who responded by firing tear gas.

Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said earlier Thursday that Israel "must pay a high price with its blood" making an apparent reference to the three killed Palestinians.

Severe weather over but rain continues
Some storms will also bring locally heavy rain at times and flooding, or flash flooding, will be a concern overnight. Tomorrow night: Still partly cloudy and muggy, with just an isolated shower or storm possible.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed in 2014 and a bid by the USA administration to restart them has so far shown little sign of progress. "The terrorist was shot and killed", an IDF statement said.

The last stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement was in April 2018 when a Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli with a screwdriver near a petrol station in an industrial area connected to the Maale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem.

Palestinians want to establish a state in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war. "When will President Abbas and Palestinian leaders condemn the violence?" he tweeted.

The incident in Adam came after a period of relative calm in the West Bank.

Kobar, north of Ramallah and some 18 kilometers (11 miles) from Adam, was also home to Omar al-Abed, who carried out a similar attack in the settlement of Halamish in July 2017 in which three Israelis were killed.

Hamas released a statement calling the stabbing "a heroic operation" and "a natural response to the crimes of the occupation", as the Gaza-based Islamist group said it would avenge the deadly bombing raids on Gaza in recent days by Israeli jets.
