President Trump is expected to announce his choice for Supreme Court justice on Monday evening.

President Donald Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to join the US Supreme Court, setting the stage for a dramatic confirmation battle over a stalwart conservative who could shape the direction of the court for decades to come.

Kavanaugh, 53, has served since 2006 on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

He is now a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

President Donald Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court.

"He is a brilliant jurist, with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time", Trump said in his prime-time televised White House announcement Monday.

A graduate of Yale and Yale Law, he also was a member of Kenneth Starr's independent counsel team that investigated President Bill Clinton.

Republicans are eager to have a new justice in place when the Supreme Court begins its new term in October.

On the appeals court, he's voted to strike down environmental regulations and said he would have overturned internet regulations issued while Barack Obama was president.

Barrett, who is 46, has less of a judicial record to review, having just been nominated to the appeals court by Trump past year.

In Seiyo in Ehime Prefecture, five people were confirmed dead due to the torrential rain, including people swept away in a auto . Yamaguchi prefecture, another area hit by the heavy rain, alerted people to heed evacuation warnings and act quickly.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey commended Trump on the nomination of Kavanaugh. And he also led the investigation into the mysterious suicide of Clinton's deputy White House counsel, Vince Foster.

"Well, they're going to be completely in concert with President Trump's promise to only appoint biased judges who will overturn Roe". Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

As soon as Kennedy announced his retirement plans on June 27, Democrats mobilized, arguing that anyone Trump selects would be hand-picked to help roll back abortion rights, Affordable Care Act protections, same-sex marriage, and scores of other decisions that have shaped modern America - while ruling in favor of corporations and against under-represented minorities.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has reportedly told Trump that the judges presenting the fewest obstacles to confirmation are Raymond Kethledge of the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Thomas Hardiman of the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Republicans now hold a 51-49 majority, but Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) is battling brain cancer and is unlikely to be present for a vote. In most of those cases, Collins supported a judicial nominee picked by a Democratic president whom her colleagues shunned.

Republicans changed the Senate's rules past year to allow them to confirm a Supreme Court justice with a simple majority vote.

In 2017, when Hardiman was last considered for a Supreme Court seat, he had the support of the president's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry.

"Beyond the procedure, beyond the gamesmanship, it is a life-and-death important decision to be made by this court on so many issues", Senator Dick Durbin of IL, the body's No. 2 Democrat, said Sunday on NBC.

Kennedy had voted to preserve the core principles of the high court's 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.

Casey said he opposes the process by which Trump is picking his judges, which he described as choosing from a list of 25 nominees prepared by conservative organizations such as the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.

The nominee is an only child who credits his mother for his career path. Martha Kavanaugh taught high school history before returning to school for her law degree. Jennifer Mascott, a law professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School in Virginia, said she naturally reached out to Kavanaugh after her father died.
