Croatia ends Russia's run to advance to World Cup semifinals

Hosts Russia hoping to extend World Cup heroics at expense of Croatia

Hosts Russia and Croatia were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes in Saturday's last World Cup quarter-final at Sochi's Fisht Stadium and the teams will now play extra time.

Croatia hadn't advanced this far at the World Cup since the 1998 World Cup, which was its first appearance.

Fyodor Smolov saw Russia's first penalty saved by Danijel Subasic and, although Russian Federation goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved a Mateo Kovacic kick, the hosts' fate was sealed when Mario Fernandes fired completely wide from their third attempt.

Hosts Russia or Croatia, who meet later on Saturday and are lower ranked than Southgate's side, are all that stands between England and a first World Cup final since they won the tournament on home soil in 1966. Both Luca Modric & Ivan Rakitic didn't see enough of the ball against Denmark, and the Croatia boss may instruct his star midfielders to drop slightly deeper to start to dictate the play.

As time ticked away, the side that hammered Argentina 3-0 in the group stage seemed to be running out of ideas, perhaps the biggest compliment to Russia's tactical discipline.

Croatia only needed nine minutes to reply when Kramaric headed home after Mandzukic broke down the left and found him perfectly.

Until the 88th minute, the script for this match read: Two evenly-matched teams battling for semi-final place.

The second half was more cagey as Croatia tried to probe through Russia's back line, and Kramaric attempted a bicycle kick that was easily gathered by Russian Federation goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Croatia continued to pass and probe, and on the hour-mark, Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic went close, hitting the post when he probably should have scored.

115 - Goal! Russia 2, Croatia 2.

The game went to extra-time with Subasic staying on the pitch despite appearing to injure his hamstring late on in normal time. Fedor Smolov tried to trick Subasic with a chip shot, but the execution was poor and Subasic was able to recover and swat the ball away after he dove to the ground.

"We have always said we would take one game at a time and we can go on and create our own history".

Just as against Spain, a tough evening could be on the cards for goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and his defence, with Mario Mandzukic, Luka Modric, Ante Rebic and Ivan Perisic the threat for Croatia.

But the hosts were again on the back foot when Fernandes sent his attempt wide of the post, and though Akinfeev pushed Modric's shot onto the post, it fell just over the line to put Croatia back in front.

Russia's midfielder Aleksandr Erokhin (L) and Croatia's defender Sime Vrsaljko vie for the ball during the World Cup Quarter Final in Fisht Stadium, Sochi, Russia, July 7, 2018.

Despite an injury, Danijel Subasic pulled off a save to put Croatia ahead from the first kick and they made the most of it, winning the shootout 4 - 3.
