Google allows developers to access user emails

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users

Users need to give explicit consent to applications or services, and if that happens through a token-based system that Google uses for this kind of authorization, it does happen without users having to supply their username or password to these companies.

The Wall Street Journal spoke to a number of companies that said they had read people's emails.

Google is allowing app developers to sift through your Gmail account.

The third-party developers who have access to Gmail user data allegedly share them with marketers, hedge funds and other businesses.

To recall, Google back in 2017, said its computers will soon stop reading the emails of its Gmail users to personalise their ads.

The Journal cites companies like Return Path, a marketing service that reviewed about 8,000 emails two years ago while working on its software; computers can handle about 100 million messages per day.

What isn't clear from The Journal's story is whether Google is doing anything differently than Microsoft or other rival email services. A huge scandal developed, however, when one developer sold data on tens of millions of users to a research firm that served political campaigns.

Ronaldo's Portugal eliminated by Uruguay
Sebastian Coates had started in his place and, had he started, Ronaldo would have relished the chance to play against him. With or without Cavani, though, Uruguay will make it tough for France and should not be written off.

The other side of the medal is that developers sometimes request permissions that they don't need explicitly and that it is often hard for users to determine whether the request makes sense.

"Nevertheless, privacy advocates and many tech industry executives say opening access to email data risks similar leaks", the report said.

They include Return Path, a company that collects data for advertisers, and email organisation tool Edison Software.

Hundreds of app developers electronically "scan" inboxes of the people who signed up for some of these programs, and in some cases, employees do the reading, the paper reported.

Although Return Path declined to comment on details of the incident, it did say it sometimes lets employees see emails when fixing problems with its algorithms. They defended this action by saying, "The practice is specified in their user agreements and they have implemented strict rules for employees regarding the handling of emails".

The other is Edison Software, an email management app.
