Trigana Air confirmed the shooting at a regional airport in Indonesia's Papua

AirAsia cancelled 6.30pm and 8pm flights on Thursday between Denpasar and Perth, as well as the 7.30pm Denpasar to Perth flight amid fears the ash could affect the aircraft engines.

The early morning closure of Ngurah Rai airport sparked the cancellation of almost 280 flights to and from the tropical paradise with some 15,700 passengers affected, according to revised figures from an airport spokesman.

The volcano's eruption threat reared its head again in November, sparking travel chaos and pounding Bali's lucrative tourism industry and its wider economy.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the disaster mitigation agency said activity was going on deep under the volcano.

"Based on the meteorology agency prediction, the volcanic ash will reach the airport on Friday morning", airport spokesman Yanus Suprayogi said in a statement, adding that a possible extension of the airport closure after 7pm would be reviewed.

About 400 local residents living near the rumbling volcano - about 75 kilometres from Bali's tourist hub of Kuta - moved to evacuation centres.

Qantas turned back two Bali-bound flights departing from Melbourne and Sydney, and delayed two more due to depart Denpasar. Authorities are still scrutinising the situation and have not raised the alert level yet.

England clobbers Panama with 6-1 win
After his hat-trick, the England captain now leads the running for the tournament's Golden Boot for the highest scorer, with five. It is so valuable to have a threat like that and it has left teams fearing us whenever we stand over a dead ball near their area.

Bali's governor said officials were working on getting visitors on their way.

A 4km exclusion area remains around Mount Agung.

"We will try our best to find a solution so all visitors can continue their trip", Made Mangku Pastika said.

An eruption at Mount Agung, about 70km from the coastal holiday area of Kuta, forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people previous year.

The crater has been erupting periodically since it rumbled back to life a year ago.

Indonesia is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a vast zone of geological instability where the collision of tectonic plates causes frequent quakes and major volcanic activity.
