BREAKING At Least 5 Dead After SUV Carrying Illegal Immigrants Crashes

Four people were killed at the scene and a fifth person died at a hospital in San Antonio, the sheriff said.

"This is not unusual, absolutely not", Boyd says, according to ABC News.

This article be updated as more details become available. One person died upon arriving at the hospital, reports ABC News.

Some of the wounded were thrown from a vehicle packed with 14 people that was travelling at 100mph (160km/h), County Sheriff Marion Boyd told KFDM News TV.

Most of the occupants were believed to be living in the country without legal permission.

The sheriff said he hadn't spoken to Border Patrol on the exact cause of the pursuit and nature of the crash. "This is, I think, a flawless example of why our borders need to be secure".

Authorities believe the driver and one passenger were USA citizens trying to smuggle immigrants into the country, Boyd said.

Both teams were competing for the main spot of Group F, which also includes Sweden and South Korea. The four-time winners have reached at least the semi-finals at every World Cup since 2002.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of those who died in the crash", U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in its statement.

Border patrol agents use all-terrain vehicles (ATV) to search for illegal immigrants along the US.

Boyd said the driver was known to police, and had been seen in the area "last week", either scouting the area or looking for immigrants to smuggle.

A Border Patrol agent observed three vehicles traveling one behind the other on FM 2664 and suspected a smuggling attempt was happening, the agency said in a statement.

The auto was carrying undocumented immigrants, though how exactly many is unclear.

The sheriff said he didn't know where the immigrants were from.
