Residents in western Japan were cleaning up debris Monday after a powerful quake hit the area around Osaka, the country's second-largest city of commerce, killing three people and injuring hundreds while knocking over walls and setting off fires.

The quake collapsed walls and damaged roofs, with the nine-year-old girl killed after she was trapped by a damaged wall at a swimming complex north of Osaka.

Two elderly men and a 9-year-old girl were died from collapsing walls and furniture. An 84-year-old man in nearby Ibaraki died after a bookshelf fell on top of him at home, according to city officials.

The magnitude 6.1 quake struck the city of Osaka and the surrounding area Monday about 8 a.m. local time. In 2016, there was a 6.2 tremor two days before a 7 magnitude quake which caused injuries and damage in southern Kumamoto. Books were thrown off the shelves at a store.

A number of train services were suspended, including the "shinkansen" bullet train. Television images showed passengers getting off trains and walking along the tracks between stations.

Shinji Toda, a professor of natural disaster geology at Tohoku University, noted that a different fault running just under the city of Osaka from north to south might have something to do with Monday's deadly quake. Power was quickly restored to more than 170,000 homes that had earlier been cut off, regional utility Kansai Electric Power Co. said. Bloomberg reported plants across the area were halted as firms assessed the damage. Train service was suspended across a wide area during the morning commute.

The quake also hit several key industrial areas near Osaka with companies like Panasonic and Daihatsu saying they were suspending production at their affected sites.

Multiple small aftershocks followed the quake, and an official from Japan's meteorological agency warned residents to remain on guard.

On March 11, 2011, a devastating magnitude 9.0 quake struck under the Pacific Ocean, and the resulting tsunami caused widespread damage and claimed thousands of lives. His girlfriend ducked down under the table. "I used the stairs but I was out of breath by the time I arrived at my office on the 22nd floor", he said.
