Police chief Hamka said that the villagers found the giant python lying about 30 metres from Ms Tiba's sandals and machete, adding that she was swallowed head first and her body was found intact.

The stomach-churning incident left residents of the remote village in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, terrified for their lives.

The python was killed and cut open to reveal what everyone had suspected: the missing woman.

The Indonesian village of Persiapan Lawela on the island of Muna is reeling in shock after the body of a missing woman was found inside the belly of a giant python.

The village subsequently launched a search for her but were horrified to find the python with a severely bloated belly just 50 yards from the garden.

According to her family, Wa Tiba wanted to check the plantation because wild boars often destroyed the crops, Tribunnews.com reported.

Local police chief Hamka, who only has one name like many Indonesians, said: "Residents were suspicious the snake swallowed the victim, so they killed it, then carried it out of the garden".

The villagers killed the snake, and laid it out on the ground.

Wa Tiba's garden is located at the base of a rocky cliff, frequented by snakes and reptiles.

Giant pythons, which regularly top six meters (20 feet), are native to southeast Asia and count as some of the largest snakes in the world. While minor attacks are common, snakes eating humans is rare. However, a year ago another deadly python had killed a farmer in the village of Salubiro. Last year a 25-year-old man was swallowed whole by a similar serpent.
