"We are going to get complete denuclearization".

Trump's administration has also been criticized for saying North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat, and that the country agreed to an intensive inspections program for their nuclear weapons, even though North Korea still has nuclear weapons and has not given any indication that they agreed to inspections. "They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea".

The words of reassurance from Pompeo came as diplomacy continued at an intense pace after Tuesday's summit in Singapore, the first between a sitting American president and North Korea's leader in six decades of hostility.

High-level meetings in June saw the two sides set a date and venue for the general-grade talks "to discuss alleviating military tensions between the two Koreas and issues with regards to holding the Defense Ministers' Meeting".

Prompted by reporters in Seoul on Wednesday on if he would like to accomplish major nuclear disarmament within Trump's current term, which ends on Jan 20, 2021, Pompeo said, "Oh yes, most definitively".

Mr Pompeo said the brief, four-point joint statement that emerged from the summit did not encapsulate all the progress the United States and North Korea had made. But "I've never agreed with 100 percent of what this president says off the cuff like that".

The official KCNA news agency ran a glowing dispatch, describing it as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations".

And he confirmed that Canada would press ahead with dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on July 1 as previously announced. He then asserted multiple times to the room full of reporters that he has a "good relationship" with Trudeau.

Trump replied by praising Kim as a "tough guy".

For its part, Beijing has broadly welcomed Trump's diplomacy with Kim.

The senior North Korean official congratulated Putin on his re-election as President and on hosting the 2018 World Cup, calling it "an important opportunity to celebrate the great Russian nation across the world, and also to maintain economic growth and promote physical fitness and sport".

Security around Kim's hotel remained tight, suggesting the North Korean leader may return after the summit.

In Washington on Wednesday, Trump, back from his first encounter with Kim, hailed the Singapore summit as a major win, declaring the DPRK no longer poses a nuclear threat. Washington and Pyongyang now have no formal diplomatic relationship, and North Korea is still technically at war with South Korea, a key USA ally.

So Pompeo had some explaining to do as he traveled to Seoul to brief the allies on what transpired in Singapore.

North Korea regards the exercises as training for pre-emptive strikes against it. -South Korean military alliance remains strong, and they will continue to closely consult on all joint security decisions.
