"President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

Before the press conference, Trump said at the signing ceremony with Kim that the denuclearization process would begin "very quickly", adding that he would meet the DPRK leader several more times.

According to Reuters, before signing what Trump described as a "comprehensive letter", Kim said the two leaders had a historic meeting "and made a decision to leave the past behind".

"The world will see a major change", he continued through a translator.

The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn labelled the President a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

The Massachusetts Democrat, who has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Trump administration, said that "success will be judged on whether it can eliminate Kim's nuclear weapons and verify they are gone".

They agreed to establish new relations between the countries and committed to "build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean peninsula", where the US and South Korea are still technically at war with the North.

These deaths cast a spotlight on suicide, which claims about 45,000 lives every year, and on the toll mental illness can take. Bourdain, a chef and host of CNN's Parts Unknown food-and-travel show, died of an apparent suicide Friday in a French hotel.

"The coming few months will give us a better indication as to whether [this] was an expensive photo opportunity or a positive breakthrough", said Patrick Cronin, the top Asia security expert at the Center for New American Security in Washington.

Conservative House Republicans were unrepentant in their praise for the president for engaging with North Korea, a sharp reversal from many of their views on similar negotiations between President Barack Obama's Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran.

The carefully-choreographed signing went slightly off script when it appeared Kim's team did not want him to use the provided pen.

During Tuesday's historic summit, Kim said it was "urgent" for North Korea and the United States to halt "irritating and hostile military actions against each other", KCNA said on Wednesday.

Mr Mohan said that he knew he had a slim chance of meeting Donald Trump.

Before the signing, Kim said the summit was a "great prelude to peace".

Trump also said Tuesday that the US and South Korea would halt some of their joint military exercises, reportedly without consulting South Korea.
