CDC: US suicide rates have climbed dramatically

More than half of USA states saw their rates increase by 30 percent or more. Digging deeper, the researchers found that several circumstances, including the loss of (or problems in) a relationship, were more likely to trigger a suicide among those who did not have a mental health condition.

The highest risk group is the youth because of the changes and stress they are consistently going through, according to Walker.

"The data are disturbing", said Anne Schuchat, the CDC's principal deputy director. The report shows in 2016 45-thousand people committed suicide. The increases were particularly stark in the intermountain West, including Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, North and South Dakota, Kansas, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

Suicide rates have risen between 1999 and 2006 in all US states except Nevada, impacting women, men, children, and people of different ethnicity and race.

"CDC data shows that suicide happens to everybody", he said.

He said, "As head of the Karnataka government, it's my responsibility to implement the judgment and directions of the high court". Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay release of Rajinikanth starrer movie Kaala which is scheduled to hit screens tomorrow.

While Connecticut has an extensive list of state agencies, nonprofit organizations and two available mental health crisis hotlines aimed at preventing suicide, the state's financial troubles have forced some of those efforts to consolidate. One meta-analysis looking at 10 studies of the aftermath of 98 celebrity deaths found a 0.26 percent rise in suicide rates in the months after celebrities kill themselves. Asked whether that was a deliberate omission, because of the political climate surrounding gun control, Stone said that suicide rates have been increasing across all methods.

The increase hasn't been a sudden spike, but a steady rise. High rates of suicide among veterans and middle-aged women have also been reported.

In the month after Marilyn Monroe died from a barbiturates overdose in 1962, there was bump in suicide deaths by as much as 12 percent, according to the Center for Suicide Prevention.

"The paper makes a clear case, correctly, about the fact that there is no one cause for suicide", he said, adding that "availability of means" makes death possible. "The pressures on middle-class and low-income families are considerable ... and it's taking its toll". Delaney said hotlines can be successful because they are always being used. "That sort of gives one pause that we need to focus on that age range".

The CDC recommended a broad approach to suicide prevention, including boosting economic support by states, supporting family and friends after a suicide, and identifying and supporting people at risk for suicide.
