Officials mulling final preparations for Trump-Kim summit

US President Donald Trump said Monday he thinks "things can work out very nicely" with North Korea on the eve of his historic summit with Kim Jong Un.

"Great to be in Singapore, excitement in the air!" he tweeted Monday.

Others include Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, who has been heavily involved in preparatory talks, and Kim Chang-son, who discussed protocol with the U.S.in Singapore for the last two weeks and accompanied Kim Jong-un on his itinerary.

Another still photo in the news clip showed him shaking hands with North Korean officials, with another showing him waving from outside the Air China 747 jumbo which brought him to Singapore.

While en route to Singapore, Trump said he looked forward to meeting Kim on what he anticipated would be an exciting day.

Both North Korea and the United States have expressed expectations for the outcomes of their first summit meeting set to open in Singapore on Tuesday.

A U.S. official said Monday that after a handshake scheduled for 9 am Tuesday, Trump and Kim will first meet one on one with translators in a session that could last up to two hours before they open the meeting to their respective advisers.

Sanders says Trump spent his flight from Canada to Singapore "meeting with his staff, reading materials and preparing for his meetings in Singapore".

The U.S.is hoping to leave the summit with a commitment from North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons but it is not yet clear what it would take for North Korea to agree to such an agreement.

Kim smiled broadly Sunday evening as he met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said.

Kim arrived with Kim Yong-chol, his right-hand man and Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho.

The jet landed at the airport Sunday afternoon amid huge security precautions on the city-state island.

Later on Sunday, Kim left the St Regis hotel in central Singapore in a motorcade that included his stretch Mercedes Benz limousine and travelled to the presidential palace, known as the Istana, where he met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the U.S. and the North. Kim visited China twice this year, but the North's media made them public only after he returned to Pyongyang.

Last year, the North made one of the biggest breakthroughs in its missile and nuclear weapons programs - which it says it needs to defend against the risk of a US invasion - when it announced that it had "completed" its state nuclear program after testing a missile capable of striking most, if not all, of the continental U.S.

When a couple of guests were seen sneaking a photo, a North Korean official stormed up to them, demanding to check their phones.

It is the farthest Kim has travelled since inheriting power in 2011, and only his third known trip outside the country since then, with the use of a Chinese plane raising questions over the state of North Korea's ageing fleet of Soviet-built aircraft. But it remains unclear if Kim will part with what he likely views as his most important bargaining chip any time soon.
