Microsoft wants to put data centres underwater

The island itself runs exclusively on renewable power generated by its own wind turbines and residential solar panels, and is also a sizeable testbed for tidal energy generation. "Naval Group's deep expertise in innovative marine technologies, including renewables, makes it an ideal choice for collaboration on Phase 2's design, fabrication, and deployment of a standard, manufacturable, rapidly deployable datacenter".

Microsoft's vision concerning Project Natick is one of sustainable data centers that operate exclusively from the seafloor, as the demand for cloud computing infrastructure is ever growing.

Microsoft has deployed a submarine-like data center off the coast of Orkney in Scotland, housing hundreds of servers under the sea with the aim of boosting internet speeds and improving environmental sustainability.

The submerged data center includes 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage - or almost 28 million gigabytes.

There are two major goals with Microsoft's Project Natick.

Water-cooling systems have always been used to keep computers from overheating, but how do you scale that up for huge data centers?

The centre is a 40ft (12.2m) long white cylinder containing 864 servers which is enough to store five million movies and could be left in the sea for up to five years.

Microsoft Reportedly Agreed to Buy Coding Resource GitHub
Despite all those users, Github was not making money, and it probably wasn't long for the world as a independent company. Many engineers use the site to store their code, keep tabs on updates, and even use it as a discussion forum.

"If we can be within one internet hop of everyone, then it not only benefits our products, but also the products our customers serve", Peter Lee, corporate vice president of Microsoft AI and Research, said in the release.

The tech giant said the unit can hold data and process information for up to five years without maintenance.

"Almost half of the world's population lives near large bodies of water", Cindy Rose, Microsoft's United Kingdom chief executive, said in a blog post Wednesday.

The company will be able to deploy a data center offshore in 90 days, whereas on land, it could end up taking years.

Dubbed Project Natick, the vessel is the second from Microsoft after it launched a similar project off the Pacific Coast. The system pipes seawater directly through the radiators on the back of each of the 12 server racks and back out into the ocean.

The units runs exclusively on locally sourced renewable power, with an expected life cycle of about five years (which Microsoft hopes to push up to 20 years). And Microsoft is ready to take "relevant moonshots" to reduce the running cost of data centers. By this time, the servers within one of these data centres would normally be retired anyway.
