Trump’s Lawyers: Obstruction of Justice Legal If You’re President

Trump speaks to the media as he departs the Oval Office for New York City May 23,2018. Trump answered questions about his upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as well as about the Robert Mueller investigation

The letter, dated January 29, argues that, as president, Trump cannot be indicted, cannot be subpoenaed and could not be guilty of obstruction of justice due to his position as "chief law enforcement officer".

Giuliani says they would contest it if Mueller tried.

The 20-page letter was a response to repeated requests by Mueller's office asking to interview Trump.

As we said, Trump now claims the appointment of Mueller was unconstitutional.

Robert Mueller's team of prosecutors and Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents has spent by far the most money on covering salaries, followed by rent and information technology services, the statement of expenditures says.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, made clear he did not think Trump or any other president should pardon himself.

Mr Trump appeared to pre-empt publication of the revelations in a string of tweets criticising the Russian Federation investigation on Saturday.

They also contended that nothing Mr. Trump did violated obstruction-of-justice statutes, making both a technical parsing of what one such law covers and a broad constitutional argument that Congress can not infringe on how he exercises his power to supervise the executive branch.

EU, Canada And Mexico Threaten Tariffs To Retaliate Against U.S.
Donald Trump is in no doubt that slapping tariffs on European steel imports is the right thing for the USA to do. Mexico and Canada are the state's two biggest trading partners.

Mr Mueller has requested an interview with the president to determine whether he had criminal intent to obstruct the investigation into his associates' possible links to Russia's election interference.

The Times was the first to report on the existence of the letter, although the president appeared to foreshadow the newspaper's scoop minutes before it was published on Saturday. This is neither an open question nor a partisan matter. Our legal team would not disclose internal communications with the office of special counsel. The resignation of the President's lead lawyer comes amid growing disagreements with Trump and increasing attacks by the President against the special counsel.

The president was not under investigation by the FBI. "Having him testify demeans the office of the president before the world".

The acknowledgment was tucked away in the letter, which largely focused on defending Trump from a potential subpoena for testimony and asserted broad executive powers to avoid a high-stakes interview with Mueller.

April 30, 2018 - The New York Times reports on at least four dozen questions that Mueller's team wants to ask Trump.

Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with Mueller's investigation, which seeks to discover whether his campaign colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 election, calling it a "witch hunt" and claiming that investigators are biased against him and seeking political retribution.

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani recently said the probe may need to be curtailed because, in his estimation, it was based on inappropriately obtained information from an informant and former FBI Director James Comey's memos. Giuliani has told The Associated Press that the president's legal team believes the special counsel does not have the authority to do so. "If there is collusion with a guy 50 rungs down, if it did, I don't know what that means", he added.
