The Lieberman-Shoigu talks come after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, during which the two men specifically discussed a proposed US-Russian-Jordanian agreement on the deployment of forces in southern Syria. "We have a good understanding with Russian Federation and we can prevent another political crisis in Syria", says a senior Israeli official.

But Hariri said three years of deepening Russian military intervention were still not enough to secure a decisive victory for Assad and that Damascus could still lose if Moscow withdrew.

"The main card was al-Nusra that was called 'moderate.' But when the scandal started leaking, that they are not moderate, they are al-Qaeda., they (the Americans) looked for another card. They suggest that this area of de-escalation needs to consolidate stability and from this area must contain all not Syrian forces, I think this should happen as soon as possible", - quotes the Minister TASS. "They have to learn this lesson". Iraq is no exception. He said people will not accept foreigners in the region anymore.

It was not the first time that Assad has threatened to attack US troops, but it was his most explicit expression yet of his determination to rid Syria of American forces.

Syria has only just begun to emerge from a devastating conflict that began in 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity. As Iran tries to establish permanent bases in Syria, Israel has attacked its positions. The area is a known stronghold for Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed militias. Reports have also circulated that Iran is being pressured to reduce its presence in Syria.

"Fortunately, it has been avoided, not by the wisdom of the American leadership, but by the wisdom of the Russian leadership".

Asked if there was anything Syria could do to stop Israeli air strikes, he said the only option was to improve air defences, "and we are doing that".

Meanwhile, in another report published on Wednesday, the Jerusalem Post said that Israel is pointing a finger at Iran for engineering "the most serious escalation on its southern front in four years".

Syria, Iran and Russian Federation all said Israel was responsible for carrying out the attack at the T-4 air base near Homs, although Israel has refused to confirm or deny the accusations.
