Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens finally resigns after allegations he forced woman into sex blackmailed her

Eric Greitens leaves the podium after announcing his resignation in the governor's office on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 in Jefferson City.

The announcement comes one day after the governor announced he's resigning.

May 14 - Three days into jury selection in Greitens' trial on the felony invasion of privacy charge, prosecutors abruptly drop the charge after the court rules that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner would be questioned and might have to testify at the trial with Greitens' attorneys attacking her handling of the case. Baker, the special prosecutor now tasked with looking into the invasion of privacy case, issued a statement last night indicating that her investigation remains active.

A spokeswoman for Gardner says the office agreed to drop the computer tampering charge after his attorneys suggested he would resign if the case was dismissed.

He said Greitens lacks deep support among Missouri's Republican power brokers, and his acknowledged extramarital affair included claims of sexual misconduct.

Greitens, who had consistently refused to heed calls within his own party for his resignation, announced hours later that he would give up the governor's seat. She said he threatened and mistreated her.

It also could free up money.

Greitens' departure will become official at 5 p.m. Friday - marking a stunning political defeat for the 44-year-old, self-made warrior-philosopher who had aspirations of someday becoming president.

James Leads Cleveland Past Celtics And Into Finals
With hustle and three-point shooting, the Rockets raced out to the lead and kept adding to it as the home crowd roared. "We've got three of the best shot makers in the league, and they all got hot at different points of the second half".

The governor admitted to having an affair but denied any criminal wrongdoing. Our review of this case, as I have stated before, will be pursued without fear or favor. The second report focused on its research into allegations Greitens tampered with a computer by taking donor and email lists from The Mission Continues - the veterans service charity he helped found in 2007 - without the charity's permission and using the information to raise approximately $2 million during the early stages of his eventually successful race for the governorship. "But I have not broken any laws or committed any offense worthy of this treatment", he said.

He continued, "I can not allow those forces to continue to cause pain and difficulty to the people that I love".

Though Greitens had believed he could beat both a criminal charge and impeachment, "he couldn't see the end without an huge financial and personal price to pay", Roe told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The chairman of the House investigatory committee and an attorney representing the woman's ex-husband both have said they have shared information with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents looking into the governor.

Greitens said the allegations amounted to a "political witch hunt", and vowed to stay in office.

"Sometimes pursing charges is not the right or just thing to do for our city or our state".

Missouri's GOP-controlled House leadership applauded the governor's decision, saying he "has put the best interest of Missourians first today by choosing to resign".

Hawley also launched an investigation previous year after The Kansas City Star reported Greitens and some of his staff had Confide accounts.
