IRAN’S NEW PLOT: Tehran Working with European Union to AVOID US Sanctions

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said India abides only by the sanctions imposed by the United Nations and not that of any individual nation indicating that the country may not be in a hurry to re-consider its economic ties with Iran on account of the fresh sanctions imposed by the U.S. on the Islamic nation.

Both developments showed the difficulty faced by governments like Russia, France, and India which have vowed that they will maintain their business ties with Tehran despite a USA decision to withdraw from Iran's nuclear deal with world powers and reimpose sanctions.

The government statement was issued following a meeting between the Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The Iran nuclear deal was signed between six countries in 2015 - Iran, the US, Britain, Germany, Russia, France and China for lifting economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limitations to the country's nuclear programme.

Global consensus to save the Iran nuclear deal from the US damage has further isolated Washington, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said here on Sunday.

The US Treasury Department announced Wednesday that Washington had imposed new sanctions on Iran. If India goes ahead with Russian and Iranian deals regardless of the sanctions threat, the USA will have little choice but to exempt India without conditions.

"Our foreign policy is not made under pressure from other countries", Ms. Swaraj told journalists at a press conference.

"After that there was talk of a meeting with the U.S.", she said. Bilateral trade between India and Iran amounted to $12.9 billion previous year.

"Fruitful visit to India, building on achievements of President Rouhani's state visit in February". India imported Dollars 10.5 billion worth of goods, mainly crude oil, and exported commodities worth USD 2.4 billion.

Most of Iran's crude exports, at least 1.8 million barrels a day, goes to India, China, and other Asian buyers.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday said it was her engagement on Twitter that has transformed the once elitist ministry to a people-centric one.

The regional bloc focusing on security and trade also includes four ex-Soviet Central Asian republics and two new members, Pakistan and India.

The minister said Modi, during his talks with May on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), also raised the issue of delay by British authorities in sending back Indian fugitives.
