Authorities say a Tesla sedan in Autopilot mode has crashed into a parked police cruiser in Laguna Beach Southern California

A Tesla Model S veered into a parked police cruiser Tuesday, severely damaging both vehicles in Laguna Beach, Calif., a coastal community south of Los Angeles.

The driver of the Tesla sustained minor injuries after the Tuesday morning crash, according to public information officer Sgt. Jim Cota. A report Tesla provided to the South Jordan Police Department said the driver took her hands off the wheel over 12 times during the drive, including for the 80 seconds before the collision. This driver is no exception: according to a Reuters report, he told the police the Autopilot was switched on when the auto crashed into the back of the police vehicle.

The officer was not in the police SUV at the time but handling a call for service about 1,000 yards away, Cota said.

Earlier in May, the NTSB opened a probe into an accident in which a Model S caught fire after crashing into a wall at a high speed in Florida.

"There is a serious argument that the incremental, "level 2/3" approach to autonomous cars followed by Tesla, where the human isn't driving but might might have to grab the wheel at any time, is actively risky and a technical dead end", tweeted, a partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

Tesla (TSLA) has faced scrutiny in recent months for several accidents involving its cars, including instances where drivers had engaged the vehicle's Autopilot system.

The Center for Auto Safety and Consumer Watchdog said it should be "reasonable" for Tesla owners to believe that their vehicle should be able to drive itself on Autopilot.

"Well what's the objective of having autopilot if you still have to put your hands on the wheel, Elon?" interviewer Gayle King asked Musk, who replied, "Oh it, it's because the probability of an accident with autopilot is just less". Drivers are also "continuously reminded" of the need to keep hands on the wheel at all times, the company added.

Tesla has previously told drivers that they shouldn't rely on the system, and that they should stay alert while it's engaged.
