How Tragic Death Of An Indian Woman Sparked History-Making Vote In Ireland

Elections official Barry Ryan said more than 1.4 million voters, or 66 percent of those who cast valid ballots, favored repealing the Eighth Amendment of the Irish Constitution while roughly 724,000 wanted to keep the abortion ban in place. But in a landslide, Irish voters rejected the amendment.

Frank Gaynor, a 75-year-old retiree, said after the Mass that he never imagined the vote in favour of abortion rights would be so lopsided.

Savita's parents played their part from their home in the Indian town Belgaum, Karnataka, releasing a video appeal to Irish voters last week.

Speaking ahead of the official result on Saturday afternoon, Varadkar said the success of the campaign was down to a number of "very fearless women and men" who told their stories and their experiences of how this "hard law created so many hard cases".

A big crowd of autonomy loving voters going mad for a good boy is honestly the best mob content we've seen.

"I feel very emotional", she said.

The referendum could pave the law for legislation to allow for abortions as late as 12 weeks into pregnancy, or later in cases threatening a woman's health or in the event of fatal fetal abnormality.

Together For Yes, an umbrella group representing pro-repeal organisations, said at a news conference in Dublin that it would support naming the new law after Savita.

Halappanavar's father, Andanappa Yalagi, told the Irish Times on Saturday that he and his wife are "really, really happy", and are grateful to all who voted "Yes" in the referendum.

He said Saturday would be remembered as the day that historically deeply socially conservative Ireland "stepped out from under the last of our shadows and into the light".

"Yes" campaigners had argued that with over 3,000 women travelling to Britain each year for terminations - a right enshrined in a 1992 referendum - and others ordering pills illegally online, abortion was already a reality in Ireland.

Ireland votes ‘yes’ to repeal constitutional abortion ban
Varadkar has campaigned aggressively for repealing Ireland's abortion ban, but the vote's results are expected to be close. It has the potential to be a huge day for Ireland should this referendum pass and the constitution is amended accordingly.

Following a 2015 vote, Ireland legalized same-sex marriage.

The text says: "The state acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right".

'After this phenomenal vote to remove the Eighth Amendment we now need to move very quickly to introducing and progressing the legislation, ' Ms O'Connor said.

Dr Martin said that following Friday's referendum the Irish Church must renew its commitment to support life but that it is called to be pro-life not just in words, statements and manifestoes but in deeds that reflect Jesus' loving care for human life at any stage.

The situation in Ireland will continue to change, and it's possible that the now proposed procedures will shift as politicians finalize the details.

According to Today FM, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that the Yes vote was "Ireland's second chance to treat everyone equally".

The law was tweaked in 2013 to allow terminations if the mother's life is at risk.

"The UK government needs to ensure that no woman on the island of Ireland is left behind, and that women In Northern Ireland can access free, safe and legal abortion at home", she told the BBC.

In practice, it meant Irish women had to travel overseas for terminations.

In the United Kingdom, abortion is legal on the British mainland but remains outlawed in Northern Ireland.
