A teacher is being credited with disarming a student suspected of opening fire at an IN middle school.

Jowitt said a male student asked to be excused from his class at the middle school, left the classroom, then returned armed with two handguns. "Something bad (could have happened) to us". Seaman was in good condition on Friday night, police spokesman Bruce Barnes said.

The teacher that was shot while taking down the shooter and was taken to IU Health Methodist hospital. Brooks said she had "just met" Seaman.

The suspected shooter is a student and in police custody.

"Our science teacher immediately ran at him, swatted a gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground", Stonebraker said.

Seaman released a statement saying in part, "I want to let everyone know that I was injured but am doing great". He released his own statement thanking first responders and students for their support.

Seaman played football for Southern Illinois University.

The president and Vice-president also took to Twitter to bestow praise. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb praised the nearly "textbook" responses.

Student Austin Duncan told local broadcaster WTTV that occupants of his classroom barricaded a door and huddled together while a teacher grabbed a baseball bat for protection. Asked to elaborate, IN state police superintendent Doug Carter said: "Wait till one day we can tell you that story".
