Evans' allegations added to those of dozens of other women, who claimed that Weinstein had engaged in a vast range of sexual misconduct dating back almost four decades, ranging from inappropriate touching to incidents of rape.

Weinstein will enter a plea of "not guilty" to charges of rape and a criminal sex act against two women in 2013 and 2004, his defence lawyer said on Friday.

Weinstein arrived at the 1st Precinct in Manhattan in NY early Friday to turn himself in.

The disgraced producer was spotted walking into the Manhattan police station with two books under his arm; Elia Kazan: A Biography, about the influential film and theater director from the late forties through the sixties, and Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution. The New York Police Department, which made the arrest, told Yahoo Entertainment: "The NYPD does not release the mugshot of anyone arrested in New York City".

Weinstein has consistently denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.

More than 70 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct although the charges relate to only two of them.

Accuser Asia Argento, who has claimed Weinstein forced oral sex on her in 1997, didn't mince words when she tweeted, "Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell". Weinstein was also ordered to wear a GPS monitoring system, stay in NY state or CT, and hand over his passport before being released.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.

Celtics, Cavs get in brief scuffle during Game 5
The Celtics are too good at home: In order for the Cavaliers to reach the NBA Finals, they will now have to win Game 7 in Boston. The chances of that happening are becoming more far-fetched every time the young Celtics enter the TD Garden.

Mr Weinstein was sacked previous year from his production firm, the Weinstein Company, which later filed for bankruptcy. "We believe that they are not factually supported by the evidence", Brafman said.

The statute of limitations for rape and certain other sex crimes in NY was eliminated in 2006, but not for attacks that happened prior to 2001.

The criminal sex act charge stems from a 2004 encounter between Weinstein and Lucia Evans, a then-aspiring actress.

American film producer Harvey Weinstein has surrendered to police on sex crime charges.

Authorities in California and London also are investigating assault allegations. On Thursday in the United States, Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and Weinstein's NY lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment.

"Mr. Weinstein's criminal attorneys Blair Berk and Benjamin Brafman have said that a fair investigation of the allegations of criminal wrongdoing will prove they are without merit", a spokesperson for Weinstein told the Los Angeles Times of the Los Angeles investigation.

He took aim at the accusations and accusers, noting that the alleged attacks weren't reported to police when they happened and suggesting potential jurors wouldn't believe the women.

Vance - a Democrat who faced public pressure from women's groups to prosecute Weinstein this time - said Friday's charges "reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation".
