'Alberto' just became the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season

Tropical Storm

Tropical Storm "Alberto"

While some models project Alberto's strongest sustained winds will reach 65 miles per hour, the biggest threat for many in the northern Gulf states - including the Wiregrass area - is heavy rainfall.

A subtropical cyclone has characteristics of both tropical and extratropical cyclones, and tends to have a broader maximum wind radius than the cone of most tropical cyclones.

Tropical-storm force winds will be possible in western Cuba and in the northern Gulf coast area where watches are posted. For the fourth consecutive time, Hurricane Season will start with a name already checked off before June 1st.

There are now no severe weather alerts for Northeast Florida, but rip current warnings were issued Friday along Florida's Gulf Coast area expected to be extended to the East Coast over the weekend. Flooding in those areas is expected.

Heavy rainfall is expected to affect the Yucatan Peninsula, western Cuba, Florida and the northeastern gulf coast through Memorial Day Weekend, the hurricane center said. The NHC expects the storm to become fully "Tropical" before it makes landfall.

Tropical Storm

The immediate Tampa Bay area could experience tropical storm-force winds by Saturday morning, forecasters said, and conditions along the coast could become unsafe with high winds and rip currents. It's expected to continue moving north through the Gulf over the weekend, with gradual strengthening.

The large band of low pressure lurking over the Yucatan Peninsula, off the coast of eastern Mexico, is threatening Florida and other southeastern states with heavy rain and flash flooding.

At 1000 AM CDT (1500 UTC), the center of Subtropical Storm Alberto was located near latitude 19.7 North, longitude 86.8 West. Impacts will extend far from the storm's disorganized center, having an impact on the northern Gulf coast and parts of Florida.

Even though South Florida is not in the projected path of Alberto, the region is on the east side - the wettest side - of the storm. The winds will create rip current dangers and hazardous boating conditions. For more information, consult products from your local weather office.
