Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump's nominee to head the CIA, says in a letter to a leading senator that the agency never should have detained terrorist suspects and employed brutal interrogation techniques against them.

Warner and Heitkamp's endorsement follows Haspel support from Democratic Sens.

She's expected to be given a positive recommendation from the committee, and will then likely face a full Senate vote sometime next week.

"The United States must send a message to the world that we hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies".

Haspel has proven to be a controversial pick for the president, over her history at the CIA and the agency's use of harsh interrogation tactics.

Warner released the letter and on Tuesday afternoon, announced that in light of her assurances, he will support her nomination. "With the benefit of hindsight and my experience as a senior agency leader, the enhanced interrogation program is not one the CIA should have undertaken".

But this isn't the first time an global company has found itself in hot water over China territorial issues. In a tweet, People's Daily showed the offending T-shirt alongside what it considers to be the correct map.

Haspel pledged at her confirmation hearing that she would never restart the program, in place in the years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, but did not go as far as saying it should not have been started. Haspel was assured of a favorable vote from the committee, which has an 8-7 Republican majority, when Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced they would support her nomination. Joe Manchin (WV) and Joe Donnelly (IN).

VoteVets, a group that advocates for veterans, launched an ad urging legislators to reject the nomination of Gina Haspel to lead the Central Intelligence Agency, tying that rejection to criticism of Haspel by Sen.

Warner's vote is crucial for Haspel, given that GOP Sen.

McCain's comments sparked a fresh debate over now-banned torture techniques ahead of Senate voting.

"Someone who has been an active participant and enthusiast for torture is not someone who should represent America", Paul said in an interview as he left the Senate for the week on Thursday. It is also not clear whether the Justice Department will provide that second report to the lawmakers before the committee votes on her nomination.
