The children are believed to have had little or no contact with others outside their families and were shown jihadist videos by their parents, police said. No fatality among the police officers but four were injured.

The coordinated attacks in Surabaya with their mix of military-grade explosives, and women and children being used as cover for suicide bombings, suggest a rising level of tactical sophistication in Indonesia's terrorists.

The families behind a wave of suicide bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya were all members of the same religious study group and radicalised their children through homeschooling, investigators in East Java have said.

A 37-year-old housewife in Banda Aceh, identified by police by her initials WF, was arrested last night for allegedly posting a comment on Facebook supporting the horrific church bombings that took place in Surabaya on Sunday morning.

Twenty five people died in the two days of attacks including a total of 13 militants and their children.

Terrorist organisations such as Islamic State, al-Quaeda, the Taliban, and this latest group - the so called Jemaah Anshorut Daulah or JAD, want to spread fear, chaos, civil unrest and uncertainty in order to weaken political, social and civil power structures and draw new recruits to their evil cause.

"Following the attack, people are more cautious".

We need to think that our reality is different, because we are not this type of club that will invest insane money. We need to feel that we are a special club; we need to create that. "That's up to Daniel and the club".

The flurry of bombings raised concerns that previously beaten-down militant networks in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation have been reinvigorated by the return of some of the estimated 1,100 Indonesians who went to fight with the Islamic State group in Syria. Another bomb exploded on Sunday evening in Sidoarjo, East Java, which killed three suspected terrorists.

The top security minister, Wiranto, who uses one name, said the government will attempt to hasten passage of an updated anti-terrorism law that has languished in parliament. Its leaders were killed in police raids and hundreds of militants were arrested.

The IS statement claiming responsibility for the attacks didn't mention anything about families or children taking part and said there were only three attackers.

The mother also participated in the attack alongside their daughters, aged 12 and 9.

Oepriarto blew himself up at Surabaya Center Pentecostal Church, while his two sons killed themselves at Santa Maria Roman Catholic church.

Elsewhere family and friends mourned the deaths of the 12 people killed in the church blasts.
