'Lost and found' asteroid returns to buzz past Earth Tuesday

Giant ‘lost’ asteroid poised for one of closest-ever approaches to Earth

Giant ‘lost’ asteroid poised for one of closest-ever approaches to Earth

Get your telescopes ready, people: asteroid 2010 WC9 will be flying by Earth at the terrifying speed of 28,655 miles per hour this Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. EDT. "This will be one of the closest approaches by a "large" (~100m) asteroid ever observed", the Northolt Branch Observatories revealed.

The asteroid almost as big as a football field was first discovered in 2010 by a group of astronomers working on the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona.

The "lost" asteroid was rediscovered on May 8, nearly eight years after it vanished from observations.

The 2018 GE3 asteroid was discovered just one day before it skimmed past Earth in what scientists called a "surprise" flyby.

But with that being said, there is an asteroid roughly the size of the Statue of Liberty that will pass uncomfortably close to the Earth tonight at around 6:05 p.m. EDT.

It will pass within 126,419 miles of Earth, or about half the distance from our planet to the moon.

Asteroid 2010 WC9 is an Apollo type space rock.

North Korea to finish dismantling nuclear test site 'within two weeks'
Yoon said some Korean-Americans are skeptical of Kim Jun Un's promises to dismantle nuclear weapons but South Koreans see promise. Most of the nuclear program was dismantled within months and nuclear material was shipped out of the country.

Asteroid 2010 WC9 is only a fraction of the size of the rock that caused the mass extinction event that killed off the dinosaurs.

The asteroid will come close enough that it will be visible to anyone with a small telescope, should the weather permit.

The asteroid 2010 WC9, affectionately known as "the lost asteroid", at 200 to 400 feet wide, is close in size to a city block wide.

London based Northolt Branch Observatories will be screening the asteroid passing earth on its Facebook page. The 2010 sign means that it was initially detected in 2010, particularly on November 30, by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona.

Here's when you can tune in to watch, or take out your telescope, depending on where you live in Canada.

"The broadcast will be less than 25 minutes in duration, as the asteroid will cross our field of view within that period of time", he added.

Astronomers said 2010 WC9 orbits the sun every 1.12 years. Our display will update every five seconds.
