Amid an ongoing thaw between North Korea and the United States, President Donald Trump confirmed that he will also meet with Kim Jong-un in Singapore on 12th June, which Trump has claimed could be a "very special moment for World Peace".

The president later tweeted he hoped the meeting with Kim would bring about world peace.

The focus of the talks is expected to be be North Korea's nuclear weapons development and testing program, which has deepened long-seated tensions between Washington and Pyongyang. "I really think he wants to do something", the president said. Kim has repeatedly expressed his commitment to denuclearization, but it's unclear on what terms.

"The next few weeks will be critical, requiring air-tight coordination between our two countries", Ms Kang said, noting South Korean President Moon Jae-in would be in Washington to see Mr Trump later this month.

Earlier, Trump suggested the demilitarised zone at Panmunjom between North and South Korea would be a possible venue for the breakthrough meeting.

Tensions between the USA and North Korea have eased in recent months and Trump accepted the invitation for a face-to-face meeting with Kim back in March.

The Singapore announcement follows US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's second visit to Pyongyang to finalise plans for the summit.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is en route back to the United States from North Korea, and he is bringing home the three Americans who had been detained in the country, President Trump announced on Wednesday.

Pyongyang appeared to have made major advances in its quest to develop nuclear weapons, claiming that it possessed missiles capable of hitting mainland US.

The summit meeting between Trump and Kim will come after almost six months of a pivot toward diplomacy from North Korea and Kim Jong-un.

South Korea said it had high hopes for the summit.

Singapore welcomed the news.

"I think there is complete agreement about what the ultimate objectives are", he said, though declined to offer more detail.
