Ireland had a wet welcome to Test cricket on Friday with the opening day of its inaugural one-off match against Pakistan completely wiped out by bad weather.

Pakistan are without the injured Yasir Shah for a tour where, after their match against Ireland, they will also play two Tests in England.

It was a victory over Pakistan at the 2007 World Cup which put Ireland on the world stage, but even then no-one, not even forward-thinking Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom, had Test match status on their radar and certainly within 11 years.

To do that, coach Graham Ford needs a method, or a brand of cricket, that plays to the strengths of his team and the South African gave a hint of his plans when Barry McCarthy, an attacking but expensive bowler, was omitted in favour of more accurate seamers.

"This week is all about Test cricket but doors and the financial aspect hopefully open up with being a full member".

Yet while many Irish sports fans are starting to get acquainted with cricket, the sport has deep roots in the "Emerald Isle". But the sport's reputation suffered from being seen as the creation of English "colonisers", with native games such as Gaelic football and hurling holding sway.

Ireland first made the rest of the cricket world take notice when they beat the touring West Indies in an ODI, in 1969.

But despite the optimism of that moment, all efforts to limit North Korea's nuclear program have, to date, failed. Trump must not rush simply in pursuit of success.

There are records of cricket being played in Ireland as early as 1731.

Ireland knockout Pakistan from the World Cup 2007 with their wonderful victory.

"Pakistan are a pretty battle-hardened side, they have a lot of guys in the squad who are potentially making their debut so there will be a lot of nerves knocking around with them". "And the risk for us is huge because it's an untested format".

If conditions in Malahide remain cold and overcast they could yet favour Ireland, although neither side will relish batting first under cloudy skies.

"There has been a lot of banging the drum", said Porterfield.

"Are we favourites? No". So, all those little factors only add to giving us a better chance of winning this game.

Latest update from Dublin is that play is still delayed by guess what?
