"Syria will continue to strengthen its air defenses, attempt to interject and down every missile fired by Israel, and target any Israeli air force asset that infringes on Syrian national airspace", he said.

The Syrian envoy rejected the Israeli claim that its assault had been directed at Iranian infrastructure.

On the contrary, Iran has been offering advisory military assistance to the Syrian government fighting an all-out foreign-sponsored militancy.

But Iran flatly denied the Israeli version of events, saying Israel's attacks were carried out on false "pretexts". Israel however, which has always been concerned about Iranian influence in the Middle East welcomed Trump's decision.

But Thursday's air raid came amid heightened tension in the regime after President Trump announced on Tuesday that the USA would withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Southern Syria was quiet but tense, with monitors saying Syrian, Iranian and allied Lebanese forces from Hezbollah were on high alert.

Iranian analysts said Israel had struck first on Thursday, and that any retaliation was the work of the Syrian military, not Iran.

"These actions are further proof that the Iranian regime's reckless actions pose a severe threat to regional peace and security".

Iran condemned the Israeli air raid on Friday and said Syria had the right to defend itself against Israeli aggression.

"I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal", Trump said Tuesday in a televised address from the White House.

They also stressed that Iran must be able to reap the benefits of the 2015 agreement. However, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says Tehran will only accept to remain in the nuclear deal if the E3 gives Tehran a guarantee that it will be able to reap all the benefits of JCPOA.

"It is time for responsible nations to bring pressure on Iran to change this risky behavior".

However, one analyst at London's Chatham House, Yossi Mekelberg, said the strikes on Iranian targets "were likely undertaken with tacit Russian approval".
