Facebook to reject abortion referendum ads from outside Ireland

SOCIAL MEDIA GIANT Facebook has announced that it is banning all ads on its platform related to the upcoming referendum if they are from advertisers based outside of Ireland.

Facebook said that for the goal of the referendum it would operate as though these tools were in place in Ireland.

Facebook stated the ban will apply equally to both sides of the debate and that it has "built relationships with political parties, groups representing both sides of the campaign".

Facebook has also reportedly launched a new "view ads" tool in Ireland, which will allow Irish users to see every single ad an advertiser is running, not just the one they're being served.

Online advertising is not regulated for under Ireland's electoral laws.

In April, Irish data protection commissioner Helen Dixon said it was possible that foreign actors could try to sway the referendum.

"Concerns have been raised about organisations and individuals based outside of Ireland trying to influence the outcome of the referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland by buying ads on Facebook". The company also said it would use artificial-intelligence technology to spot potentially problematic material.

Oil prices surge to near 4-year high

The company will soon start requiring political advertisers to be residents in the country where the election is taking place. Facebook's advertising system has become a favorite of political groups because it is largely automated and makes it easy to target narrow segments of voters.

Given that the 20-16 election, the face-book has generated numerous policy modifications to deal with concerns over the part it plays in politics and elections across the globe.

The move comes as Twitter has clarified that it will not allow any ads relating to the abortion referendum. It demonstrates that the Yes campaign's message of care and compassion for women in Ireland is hitting home with people across the country.

According to AP, Facebook is testing a new process that will confirm whether or not an advertiser taking out political ads is located within the country holding that particular vote - and with the 2018 US midterms coming up, it's significant timing.

The results were welcomed by Together For Yes who say poll shows consistent support for a Yes vote on the referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.

No. There is no facility for ordinary users to report the ads directly to Facebook.
