This meeting is the second face to face summit between the two leaders this year, after they held a secret meeting in Beijing in March. Mr Kim's presence wasn't confirmed until he left, flying out on Tuesday afternoon.

"President Trump and President Xi agreed on the importance of continued implementation of sanctions on North Korea until it permanently dismantles its nuclear and missile programs", the readout said.

For his part, Kim could be trying to improve ties with Xi - which have been frosty, to put it mildly - in case his outreach to Trump falls flat, analysts say.

"I hope to build mutual trust with the US through dialogue", Kim was quoted as saying.

Kim announced the decision for North Korea to establish its own time zone, called Pyongyang Time, in August 2015.

In a text message to reporters, Moon's spokesman, Kim Eui-kyeom, said China had informed South Korea of the Dalian summit.

There are no regular commercial flights between Dalian and North Korea and the airport was closed to other aircraft while the plane departed, NHK reported.

China has been largely sidelined by the developments between the two Koreas and the U.S., and will be keen to ensure the North does not get too close to Washington, which it sees as a competitor in the region.

Kim recently said he would abandon his country's nuclear weapons if the United States agrees to end the Korean War and promises not to invade, a South Korean official said after the historic North-South summit last month.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he will discuss trade with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, as both sides continue talks after failing to reach a consensus at talks in Beijing last week, Reuters reports.

According to a recent poll, 88 percent of the South Korean public viewed the recent peace summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in as a success.

After news of the meeting between the two leaders was released, Trump announced that he would be speaking to "my friend" Xi on Tuesday.

Intense secrecy typically surrounds high-level North Korean visits to China, and this week's trip was no different. A North Korean official on the Korean Central News Agency referred to the situation, stating "This act can not be construed otherwise than a risky attempt to ruin the hard-won atmosphere of dialogue and bring the situation back to square one".

Posts about unusual traffic jams and security in Dalian popped up on Chinese social media.

China is the only major ally of North Korea, though in recent months, trade between them has declined sharply, as Beijing uses economic United Nations sanctions in response to nuclear bomb tests and ballistic missiles of the North, writes CBSnews.

There had also been talks about denuclearising North Korea and improving relations with China as they had become strained in recent years.

One of the planes seen in Dalian resembled the one used by Kim's sister and close aide, Kim Yo Jong, to travel to South Korea for the Winter Olympics in February.

It was not known how long the Xi-Kim meeting had been planned or why Dalian was chosen.
