Terre Haute police officer killed in the line of duty

"It is another tragic loss for the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Police Department", Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police said in announcing the officer's death.

As they approached the apartment on Linwood Street just after 6:30 p.m., the officers were fired upon from a second-story window nearly immediately and they returned fire, police said.

He says no additional information was immediately available on the male officer who was killed.

The suspect was located around 9:15 p.m. when members of the Terre Haute Police Department SWAT team entered the apartment building.

Wounded during a shootout with police was taken to regional hospital Terre-Hout, where he died. That suspect also died from his injuries.

The Vikings selected cornerback Mike Hughes with the No. 30 pick in last week's National Football League draft to provide depth. They took Mike Hughes out of UCF in the first round (No. 30 overall) and also added Holton Hill as an undrafted free agent.

Upon finding the man, police did call for a medic.

The police officer was on the scene as a part of a murder investigation, Terre Haute police spokesman Ryan Adamson stated, however authorities didn't reveal when the murder occurred.

"We're unfortunately seeing this too often when people are engaging with law enforcement and we are losing our lives and other agencies have to work those cases for us", says Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse. But the suspect immediately opened fire from the second floor and hit the officer.

A veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department was killed in the line of duty Friday.

"When that call comes out, that's literally the worst call you can hear as a police officer is when a fellow officer, he or she is down, so that will draw out everybody", says Sgt. Joe Watts with ISP. That is when Officer Brent D. Long was killed while serving an arrest warrant with a U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force.
