Funerals for seven of the victims took place Friday, drawing thousands of mourners, the Times of Israel reported.

Nine teenagers are confirmed dead and another remains missing in flash floods that struck Israel near the Dead Sea, the country's rescue service said Thursday.

The ten students, mostly aged 17 and 18, were caught up in floods while hiking in the Arabah desert in southern Israel following exceptionally heavy rainfall.

Police arrested Yuval Cohen, principal of the Bnei Zion pre-military academy in Tel Aviv, and 27-year-old Aviv Bredichev, one of the group's guides, Thursday night on suspicion of negligent homicide in the death of 10 students during a field trip.

The nine hikers, eight female and one male, were part of a group of about 25 people who were hiking in the vicinity of the stream near the Dead Sea.

Officials said that the teenagers were killed during a hike intended as a bonding exercise for the students who were due to start the Benny Tzion pre-military academy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a "disaster" and said he was being updated regularly by those conducting the search. "We embrace, with pain, the grieving families, and pray for the speedy recovery of the wounded". We will strengthen and lend help to the forces who are now working to rescue, find and treat those injured.

The unseasonable flooding also claimed the lives of four others over the course of two days and prompted a dramatic rescue attempt involving search teams and helicopters. The main question being asked was why the group had made a decision to continue with the hike in an area known for flash floods.
