Local authorities take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The event, sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, is created to keep potentially unsafe drugs off the street by giving people a safe, convenient way to dispose of unneeded or unwanted prescription drugs.

The prescription drug take-back day is one way law enforcement is fighting the opioid crisis. "Our goal is to take as many of those off the street as we can", Barnes said.

It was all part of 'National Prescription Drug Take Back Day', a day organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration. "So when they have this we're able to bring it here where we know it's safe and will be taken care of".

About a dozen people dropped off medication at the city police's Red Med Box on Saturday, said Sgt. Steve Schmeling.

Last October, 912,305 pounds of pills were collected nationwide.

The sites accept pills, tablets, and patches but not liquids or syringes.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day gives individuals and communities the opportunity to help prevent pill abuse and theft by removing potentially unsafe, expired, unused, or unwanted prescriptions drugs from homes across the nation. So, its prescribed medications, something they're not comfortable with having around the house.

"We're not out to get people in trouble for disposing of it properly", he said.

There's a separate drop-off box for syringes also in the lobby.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. people could anonymously drop off their prescriptions, with no questions asked at the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, West Elmira Fire Department and Elmira Savings Bank.
