Maria Shriver, Rachel Maddow, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O'Donnell, Anne Thompson and Kristen Welker were among the women who put their names to the letter. "We know him to be a man of tremendous decency and integrity".

The allegation against Mr. Brokaw comes as NBC News, a division of Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal, is still reeling from the exit of Matt Lauer, who was sacked in November as lead anchor of its morning show "Today" after a network staffer accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior.

In an email to friends and colleagues on Friday, Mr. Brokaw, who anchored "Nightly News" for more than two decades and now is a special correspondent with the network, confirmed he went to her hotel.

Vester, 52, who can speak Arabic and has reported from the Middle East and Africa during chartbeather career, including the First Gulf War and the Rwandan genocide, told Variety that Brokaw forcibly tried to kiss her when she was 28.

Brokaw, meanwhile, withdrew on Friday as a commencement speaker at Fairfield's Sacred Heart University next month, saying his appearance would be a distraction.

McMahon, head of the Small Enterprise Administration, is a donor for the college and beforehand served on its governing board.

The Washington Post and Variety reported the charges by Linda Vester, a former NBC News and Fox News Channel correspondent. Brokaw wrote that Vester sought him out for the meeting in the NY hotel room, a characterization she rejects. He said that he "may have leaned over for a perfunctory good night kiss" on the cheek in London.

"A woman approached me and asked me tearfully if I could help her", Curry said.

Prince William Drops Hints About the New Royal Baby's Name
The name of the baby prince of Cambridge, who was born on Monday at 11.01am weighing 8lb 7oz, has yet to be unveiled. Carole was seen stocking up on supplies at a Boots store in west London within hours of the birth of the new baby .

Brokaw dismissed Vester as having had "limited success at NBC News, a modest career at Fox and a reputation as a colleague who had trouble with the truth".

"People are afraid to report on people in power", Ellison said. He referred to Vester as a "character assassin". Strip away all the hyperbole and what has she achieved? "Hard to believe it wasn't much more Look at Me than Me:Too".

Both Variety and The Washington Post interviewed Vester for stories that were published on Thursday. "But as I write this at dawn on the morning after a drive-by shooting by Vester, the Washington Post and Variety I am stunned by the free ride given a woman with a grudge against NBC News, no distinctive credentials or issue passions while at Fox", Brokaw wrote.

The letter, signed by current and former colleagues of Brokaw that was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, refers to the anchor as "a man of tremendous decency and integrity" and describes him as respectful and professional.

NBC's prior firing of Today show co-host Matt Lauer had already caused a stir at the network.

In a note to staff on Friday, NBC chairman Andy Lack said NBC takes allegations like those against Brokaw very seriously, and said findings from the network's internal review into Lauer's actions may come out as soon as next week.

Lack also said NBC has conducted "a substantial culture assessment with hundreds of employees" and is running mandatory workplace training sessions. Former "Today" anchor Ann Curry told the newspaper that she complained to NBC management on behalf of a woman who alleged improper behavior by Lauer.
