After having been pushed to the brink of elimination, the Oklahoma City Thunder saved itself with a remarkable comeback.

The Oklahoma City Thunder emerged from the jaws of defeat and elimination, pulling off a huge second-half rally to deny the Utah Jazz in game five of their Western Conference first-round National Basketball Association playoff series.

With the 216cm Frenchman out the Thunder's All-Stars Westbrook and Paul George, who had appeared defeated until that point, went on a scoring rampage.

OKC continued the dominance through the final 12 minutes as Westbrook combined with Paul George to nail the coffin shut on a Jazz comeback.

Holding a 3-2 advantage in the series, Utah can close it out with a victory at home on Friday.

The top-seeded Rockets had no trouble closing out their Western Conference quarterfinal series in five games. They have big reputations to keep, a heavily-hyped season to save and quite possibly could lose George to free agency if they fizzle in the first round. Utah led 91-90 after Gobert's dunk with 6:36 remaining before Westbrook and Alex Abrines buried 3-pointers to give the Thunder a five-point lead with 5:52 to play.

"We have had success but eventually it's not going to work and we have to play better defence as guards ourselves". Meanwhile, the Jazz will be confident that they can replicate their start to Game 5 as well as their play from the trio of wins. The game was tight all the way through, but the Raptors outscored the Wizards by nine points in the fourth quarter. The Jazz were ahead 71-46 with 8:34 left in the third quarter before Westbrook began to sizzle on his way to 45 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists.

He finished with 44 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, making all 15 of his free throws.

On the other hand, Donovan Mitchell has a different perspective on the choking at the Chesapeake, one that has less to do with miracles on the part of the Thunder and more to do with Jazz mistakes. Oklahoma City then controlled the fourth quarter.

We'll see now if those 20 disastrous minutes have undone what had been building for three months and three playoff games, time and triumphs that up until now had seemed unsullied and irreproachable.

Westbrook had his 33 over that span. George went for 21 then.

Utah takes a 3-2 lead back to Salt Lake City for game six on Friday.

With the Thunder staying alive in the most dramatic fashion imaginable, it's hard not to think about how the landscape of the entire series may have changed.

It was no coincidence that OKC's rally happened with Anthony on the bench.
