Mike Pompeo testifying to the Senate during hearings on his appointment as Secretary of State

White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short said Monday that Democrats are being pressured by liberal groups to vote against Mike Pompeo's confirmation for secretary of state. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., has not publicly committed to supporting Pompeo, but his GOP colleagues are confident he ultimately will vote for his nomination. He was confirmed by a vote of 66-32.

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was ousted from the role by Trump last month, and the president then nominated Pompeo, a former Tea Party congressman, for the role.

"We are in an era where somebody like this, who is qualified, unfortunately, is likely to be voted out without recommendation or with a negative recommendation", Sen.

"I can not overlook grave doubts about his anti-diplomacy disposition", said Sen. 'However, I remain concerned that Director Pompeo will not challenge the President in critical moments. First in his class at West Point. He was elected to the House in 2010 as a tea party Republican from Kansas and served until he went to the Central Intelligence Agency.

Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican who chairs the committee, blamed partisan politics for opposition to Pompeo, saying Pompeo is just as qualified as past secretaries of state nominees Hillary Clinton or John Kerry, both of whom received overwhelming support. "The American people deserve better".

Even Democrats who are not facing tough reelection races are leery about setting a new standard by trying to block Pompeo in committee.

Schatz said he is voting against confirming Pompeo because he has "an alarming tendency towards military provocation and brinkmanship". It was Kim's first meeting with a USA official.

Playoff P shows why OKC is a legit title threat
Neither bench did much in this game as the Jazz bench produced 16 points while the Thunder were at 21. Imagine the Jazz's winning a road playoff game while going almost six minutes without scoring.

But all 10 Democrats and Republican Sen.

Several days ago, Trump said, "I will say this about Rand Paul: He's never let me down".

Trump has said he was doing some last-minute lobbying to bring Paul back to the fold, however.

Passage by the full Senate seems likely but not assured: approving a rejected nominee on the Senate floor hasn't happened since 1945.

The committee action won't necessarily stall Pompeo's confirmation before the full Senate, but it would be an unusual setback not seen since the panel took a pass on John Bolton, President George W. Bush's pick for ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump has threatened to abandon the accord on May 12, when the next deadline for sanctions renewal comes up.

Pompeo also has solid knowledge of the world, the discipline to oversee complex diplomacy and - a double-edged sword, we admit - the trust of a President who seems to believe in nearly no one. He would replace Rex Tillerson, the former oil executive who was sacked in March after a very rocky relationship with the White House and a management approach that left the State Department understaffed and demoralized.
