The company canceled more than 70 flights Monday. The canceled flights were heading to Dallas and Phoenix at noon. Additional cancellations are possible.

He added that the NTS wants to carefully comprehend what the result of the jet engine problem is and that it has raised serious concerns with the Boeing 737-700 fleet that the investigators are now looking into.

The Board chairperson for the National Transportation Safety Robert Sumwalt on Wednesday told reporters that the accident happened as a result of one of the jet engine's 24 blades snapping from its hub.

Initial investigations on the plane that was forced to perform an emergency landing found, that a fan blade had broken off and penetrated the engine casing.

Nearly 700 engines on older Boeing Next Generation 737s are undergoing urgent fan blade inspections in the wake of the tragic Southwest Airlines failure that killed a 43-year-old mother of two.

According to Southwest Airlines, 40 flights were canceled due to voluntary fan blade inspections on Sunday.

Officials say 352 engines in the US and 681 worldwide will receive ultrasound inspections, specifically focusing on the same type of fan blades that investigators say broke apart during Flight 1380's journey. It recommended customers check their flights' status on its website.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered inspections of 352 jet engines in the USA and another 681 worldwide on "new generation" Boeing 737 jets.

The FAA and EASA directives came on the same day that the engine manufacturer, CFM International, issued a service bulletin recommending the CFM56-7B engine be inspected more frequently.

It noted that the CFM-56B, which entered service in 1997, had been a workhorse of the airline industry with more than 350 million flight hours accumulated.

Southwest did not immediately say what proportion of the delays was tied to the engine inspections, or whether another problem was contributing to the widespread disruptions.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said this week that it is too early to draw any conclusions regarding what caused the engine explosion on Thursday.

CFM and the FAA both called for inspections of the engines at the time, but the regulators did not publish a directive. A jet engine cycle comprises an engine start, takeoff and landing, and full shut down.
