Gymnastics icons Martha and Bela Karolyi were unaware of the decades-long abusive behavior of former national team doctor Larry Nassar, the coaches said in a new interview.

Ms. Maroney and also hundreds of other gymnasts, each elite and aspiring, given announcements in two counties in MI earlier this year earlier Dr. Nassar has been sentenced to forty to 125 decades in prison for felony sexual activity in some of those scenarios, and also to 40 to 175 several years for comparable rates in another.

The Karolyis have been named as co-defendants in several civil lawsuits filed against Nassar and USA Gymnastics, including one by former national team member Mattie Larson. "How could I see?"

Martha Karolyi explained her reasoning in taped comments that aired Friday morning, marking the first public reaction from her and her husband, legendary coach Bela Karolyi, since Nassar's downfall changed the sport forever.

"The whole thing is just like an explosion, a bomb exploding", Bela Karolyi said.

The Georgia lawsuit revealed that USA Gymnastics had an internal policy of not forwarding allegations of child sex abuse to authorities unless they were submitted in writing and signed by a victim or a victim's parent.

USA Gymnastics cut ties with the Karolyi Ranch in January after several gymnasts - including four-time gold medalist Simone Biles - said Nassar abused her at the ranch.

"I heard during the testimonies (at Nassar's sentencing) that some of the parents were in the therapy room with their own child and Larry Nassar was performing this", she told Savannah Guthrie. The ranch served as the training home for USA Gymnastics during most of Martha Karolyis highly successful tenure running the national team. “I think theyve watched and seen as their reputation has really taken a hit and people have asked a lot of questions about what they knew and just as importantly what they should have known.”.

USA Gymnastics' president and board of directors eventually resigned in the wake of the Star's investigation, a new federal law was passed and Nassar was convicted in federal and state courts on multiple counts of sexual abuse while working with the U.S. Olympic team as well as in the Michigan State University athletic department.

"They answered every question", Guthrie told The Associated Press. "At no time did their lawyer jump in and say 'You can't answer that'".

While it's still unclear whether the Karolyis knew of Nassar's abuse, dozens of athletes allege other forms of abuse took place at the ranch including verbal and emotional abuse, and limiting food intake of athletes during arduous training sessions.

"That's terrible", Martha Karolyi told NBC, when asked about Nassar's crimes.
