Motorola unwraps its latest Moto G6 and E5 handsets

Moto Z Play receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update in India

Motorola has always been the go-to brand for quality smartphones at affordable prices. Motorola makes no promises about to major OS release updates for the Moto E family.

Like the E6 phones, both the Moto E5 Play and Moto E5 Plus have front and back cameras, Snapgdragon processors, and fingerprint readers but some features are specific to just the Moto E5 Plus like face-detection, burst shot ability and Laser Autofocus. In typical Motorola fashion, all four devices share consistent design themes. The highlight of the new Moto E5-series is the taller displays which come with 18:9 aspect ratio and bigger batteries, which are two of the most demanded features in the budget smartphone segment, the same category where both these smartphones will be competing.

Perhaps the biggest upgrades Motorola has packed into the G6 and G6 Plus are dual rear cameras. But they're arriving at an opportune time for Motorola. The main difference between the Moto G6 and the Plus version is the screen size, which has been reduced to 5.7 inches in the standard version. The Verge speculates that the new Moto E phones will start at around $100, but there's a possibility that the E5 Plus might start at the $200 range. Most markets will only get one or two of the three models, which Motorola says is an attempt to simplify the offerings - and indeed, when you look at these three phones it's hard to see what market would demand the choice of all three. There's no need to hold down the home button or tap anything - simply point the phone at a landmark or object, and the G6 will identify it or link to a Google search where applicable.

From the front, the Moto G6 is a pretty standard smartphone. The Moto E5 Play is also powered by the Snapdragon 425 SoC in some markets and in some markets, it comes with the Snapdragon 427 SoC. That light touch with software combined with an octa-core Snapdragon 450 keep everything moving at a respectable pace - just don't expect to do any heavy gaming on this thing. The competition is only going to get more fierce as the year rolls on, but Motorola has proven itself to be one of the world's best - if not /the/ best outright - at crafting quality, low-priced devices. However, we won't know for sure until we're able to conduct some testing in our lab. However, it will come in dual- as well single-SIM (Nano SIM) variants.

In the photography department, it features an 8-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.0 and a 5-megapixel front camera with LED flash.

Inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog group were in Damascus and had been expected to head to Douma on Saturday.

The Moto E5 less interesting but it is even cheaper. Alongside, the company also revealed the E5 Play and E5 Plus. Just aim the G6 at a famous place and it will pop up information about it. Object recognition is similar but works with anything.

For a number of years now, Lenovo-owned Motorola has specialized in mid-range Android smartphones that combine decent specs and design with affordable prices. The Play drops down to a removable 2,800 mAh, though all three unfortunately charge over micro-USB. The Moto E5 comes equipped with a 5.7-inch screen, a 4,000 mAh battery, but the rear camera is bumped up slightly to a 13MP sensor. It also has fingerprint sensor located below the display.

On first impressions, the Motorola Moto G6 Plus is a tricky phone to judge.

What excites us most, however, is the battery.

Motorola said last month that it will be announcing new products in April.
