Apple Will Reportedly Launch a Paid News Subscription Service in the Next Year

Your Apple News app may soon get a paid-subscription makeover, as Apple plans to integrate what's been called "the Netflix of magazines" to the now free service.

About a month ago, Apple spent part of its enormous cash reserves on acquiring digital magazine subscription service Texture.

Sources say that when the news subscription service launches next year, a portion of the subscription revenue will go to magazine publishers that are part of the program. Before News, Apple had had Newsstand, which was essentially a market for purchasing subscriptions to individual magazines and newspapers.

If Apple charges a few dollars per month versus the current $9.99 cost for Apple Music or Texture as it exists today, the company could boost subscription numbers, he said.

Apple is preparing to give its online services division a shot in the arm by launching a beefed-up news subscription service, Bloomberg is reporting.

Apple stock got hit in late March, along with the broader tech sector, but remains up for the year. Services revenue grew 23% to $30B in FY17, but execs have a goal of $50B by 2021. Apple will put the acquisition to good use by integrating it into the Apple News app, as reported by Bloomberg on Tuesday. There is speculation that Apple will keep Texture's $9.99/month pricing for the revised Apple News subscription service. Since then, the company has turned the service into Apple Music and now has over 40 million paid users on the platform. Still, the initiative probably "won't move the needle for Apple's subscription business", Munster added. Apple rarely cuts positions, but after the company acquired Beats, it released about 200 people.
