Strong to severe storms likely Saturday afternoon

Severe weather possible Friday afternoon, evening

Robertson said Friday afternoon that a weather system moving across the country could produce severe thunderstorms in the area, with heavy rain and the potential for damaging winds or possibly even tornadoes.

A broken line of severe thunderstorms is now ongoing out towards our west, and the forward motion of this boundary will greatly dictate how our Saturday's severe threat develops.

Storms beginning over north Alabama early Saturday will create a threat of winds up to 60 miles per hour and tornadoes through Sunday.

During the severe weather threat on Friday evening staff at Kauffman Stadium were monitoring the radar in case they needed to put that plan into motion.

A Flash Flood Watch has been posted for most of the WAFB viewing area from 1 AM Saturday through 1 AM Sunday.

Cameroon athletes go missing
Gold Coast organising committee chairman Peter Beattie said he wasn't surprised and it was something that happened at other games. The former sprinter said that the home-based athletes should be given more consideration in the area of financial remuneration.

Damaging wind is more likely to be the theme during the morning storms with flooding being the bigger threat in the second round. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center (WPC) also has a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall posted for our area. These storms are expected to be somewhat separate cells at first, but will eventually start to run together before a line of storms forms along a cold front this evening.

What are the main threats to be anxious about? Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday mornings may fall to around 40 degrees across much of the area with temperatures a few degrees cooler in counties to the north.

A warm Saturday locally can help support at least borderline severe storms with strong wind gusts.

Melbourne will drop to a minimum of 19 degrees on Saturday night, with a low to medium chance of a passing shower. Forecast models bring 3 to 10 inches of snow and sleet to the Coulee Region through Sunday night, with the highest totals to the NE.

By late Saturday afternoon rain will change over to a rain/snow mix and eventually snow over central and southern Iowa.
