At least, that's more believable than the notion of Trump and Sessions attempting to protect minority voting rights. Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on the Census, said in a statement.

However, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, applauded the change.

Celina Moreno, an attorney with the defense and educational Fund, said the inclusion of the citizenship question could violate an individual's rights.

That includes people who fear they will be deported if they divulge their lack of citizenship to a federal government that has grown increasingly hostile toward immigrants.

Several states that have slowing population growth or high numbers of immigrants such as California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts and OH are typically at risk of losing U.S. House seats when their congressional districts are redrawn every 10 years - depending on how fully their residents are counted.

The citizenship question on the federal census has more of an impact, since it reaches more people and there are increased fears that the data could be used for immigration enforcement, he said.

"This is a question that's been included in every census since 1965, with the exception of 2010, when it was removed", Sanders said during a Tuesday White House press briefing.

According to the Pew Research Center, Nevada had the nation's highest percentage - 7.2 percent - of unauthorized immigrants in 2014.

But Massachusetts state law has long required cities and towns to ask residents for their nationality if they're not USA citizens, as part of a local census, also known as a resident listing, Galvin's office acknowledges.

The document also noted that the Japanese government has put out feelers on a possible summit, according to Asahi . The document says that the meeting between Kim Jong Un and Abe could take place in Pyongyang in early June.

Since 1960 the bureau has found that the foreign-born population has grown from one in 20 residents to one in eight.

In a memo issued Monday, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said, inquiring about citizenship was in response to a request by the Department of Justice.

Ross disagreed with those who argued the citizenship question will skew the count. For data to be accurate, residents must give responses that are in line with the facts.

The lawsuit comes just days after the Trump administration announced it would be including a question about citizenship on the 2020 census, drawing intense criticism from Democratic states and civil rights groups, including the NAACP. Sosa, who previously helped canvass for the census, said the move politicizes the census process.

"This request is an extraordinary attempt by the Trump administration to hijack the 2020 census for political purposes", wrote Becerra and Padilla.

The Attorney General disagreed with Secretary Ross and said the question would lead to inaccurate counts, as undocumented people would be afraid to answer the question. "The census constitutes the backbone for planning how and where our communities will invest taxpayer dollars", said Attorney General Becerra. Only in the U.S.is this considered at all controversial - and it shouldn't be.

California state Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed a lawsuit March 27 in the U.S. District Court of Northern California. The commerce department had to make the announcement this week.

"There is precedent for sharing this information, like when the census was previously used for the Japanese internment camps - information was shared", said Congresswoman Grace Meng of District 6, which covers Queens. "A question on citizenship is a reasonable, commonsense addition to the census".
